Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water...

Next week is Vincent's 5th birthday, so we are having his party tomorrow. I decided to make some shark cupcakes for the party.

I started with these ingredients (except the swedish fish--I ended up not making the fish cupcakes. Too tired)
First I shaped the Twinkies into the body of the shark. I cut the chocolate wafer cookies in half for the fins. They were so delicate I broke many of them and had to keep cutting.

I assembled them onto the cupcake. I made a slit in the back of the twinkie to put the fin in. I then stuck in the freezer for a while.

This was the hardest part! I had to dip them in slightly melted gray frosting (I used a can of frosting and colored with black icing dye). The first couple dipped fine, but then I had a difficult time trying to get the entire thing into the cup I was using. The book I got this idea out of only made 3. I was making 15. In retrospect I needed a deeper cup and double the amount of frosting (alot of which would have been wasted). It was an incredible mess and time consuming.
The rest was fine. I used red fruit leather cut into an oval for the mouth. I piped white frosting for the teeth (that part was fun and much quicker than I was expecting). I used an upside down mini chocolate chip for the eyes and piped some black frosting for the gills (or ribs as Vinnie kept calling them).

I got the idea out of an awesome book called "Hello Cupcake". There are tons of other fun ideas I can't wait to try!

Seriously, those are just crazy! When it comes to food and baking I just don't have the patience. You should have seen the birthday cake I made my husband. I didn't wait for the cake to cool before I frosted it so it was all leaky.

Are you kidding me? Those are fantastic!

Maybe if the whole doctor thing doesn't pan out, you could open a bakery, because I seriously would pay someone else a lot of money to do that.

Those are adorable! Huh, I used to do stuff like that when my kids were younger ... I'll either need to borrow kids, or wait for grand-babies.

My daughter thought these were cool too. Maybe enough to get her thinking about children so she can make them ... nah, probably not *smile*

Those turned out awesome. I wonder if my 2nd grader is too old for them? Nah--my 5th grader would like them too. Where do you find black icing dye?

Michele- I used Wiltons icing color paste. They come in tons of colors and work much better than food coloring. I get them at Michaels arts and crafts store, but I am sure any cake decorating place would have them
