And then my heart melted...

This morning before school Joey and I hit a rough patch where he yelled that he hated me and I was the worst mom ever. What horrible thing did I do to my child to deserve this? I told him he had to bring a sweatshirt to school today. I know, I know. This was terrible of me and I am lucky I didn't receive a beating as well. This is a phrase we hear often from Joey ( Another favorite of his is "This is the worst day ever!") Seriously, I thought only girls were this melodramatic. After things calmed down I explained to him how hurtful that was for me to hear. I know I should ignore it, but frankly I have had it with this and am trying to at least bring it to a minimum. I gave him a kiss and sent him off to school (with his sweatshirt in his bag).

This is what he wrote me after school. I know! My heart just melted when I saw it.

In case you aren't fluent in first grade writing, let me interpret. "I am sorry for saying I hate you. I love you!!! by Joey"

As an aside, while his spelling leaves alot to be desired, his printing may be better than his fourth grade brother Zach.

Awww - how sweet is that?! The note, part I mean.

I suggest framing that for future teenage antics.

And I thought my oldest was the only one to say "but you ruined my BEST DAY EVER!" (the most recent incident when I forgot to put his favorite chicken pot pie in the oven in time for dinner - he had pancakes instead. I weep for when his life gets really tough).

That is to cute. It is funny I was able to read that before you wrote what it said.

I was able to read the note as well (I used to teach 1st grade and I wouldn't worry about his spelling just yet;), but what a sweet note! Definitely something to keep. . . I used to be the dramatic one out of my family-using the "hate" word often b/c I thought it held so much power. I sure hope my boys don't plan on using it as often as I used to!

That is such a sweet (phonetic) love letter. I'm glad things have blown over. :-)

Aw, made my heart melt, too! What a sweetie! A heart-felt apology with no force behind it (lol) is the best thing in the world coming from a child. I second the idea of framing for the teenage years...

Awww, how sweet. I have many similar "love letters" from my boys as well.

It seems like saying "I hate you" is a rite of passage (at least in this house). We usually respond with "I'm sorry you're feeling so angry."

It seems to diffuse them, in fact our oldest kid said it a couple more times (after my response) with the inflection dying off each time. The last time she said it, her voice was quiet and it was almost like a question.

Thankfully we haven't heard it much lately. But I know it's not gone.

And yes, the crime is usually something like telling them to take boots to school that day. I guess it's a way for them to feel powerful. Oy vey.

OMG! My heart melted when I read that too. I frequently get the "I hate today!" comments at my house as well. So sweet. I hope you keep that forever. :)
